That day in Corfu –
how surprised we were
by its narrow lanes,
small fountains
and hidden piazzettas –
so different from the
islands, and its sun-drenched,
whitewashed houses
here, in Corfu, a more subdued architecture
its tonality nearly Italian –
square, two or three-storied
buildings painted in ochre hues,
folks talking over our heads,
bedcovers hung out in the wind –
running from the windows of a house
to the neighbor’s window across the street
a UFO
caught between
clotheslines.

Irina is a Canadian poet, and a member of the Writers’ Union of Canada (TWUC).
Sea Glass Circe, her fourth book, was selected for an official launch as part of the 2020 Toronto LitUp!, Toronto International Festival of Authors (TIFA).
Her latest poetry book, written in French, Variations sans palais, was published with Éditions L’Harmattan (France) in 2020.
