34 | Poetry by John J. Dunphy, Pushcart Prize Nominee & Literary Gadfly to President Ronald Reagan

Editor’s Note: A peeved President Reagan quoted from John’s article, “A Religion for a New Age,” published in The Humanist, during one of his speeches. This is a fact that has made me giggle aloud since learning of it around the time that I first had the honor of publishing John’s work in the debut issue of The Starlight SciFaiku Review, Summer 2021.

Country Road & Other UFOku

country road
UFO beams up
an abandoned dog

beamed up –
the hitchhiker’s thumb
still outstretched

crash landing
surviving alien sound asleep
in a homeless shelter

Arizona night
a UFO cruises Route 66
from a mile up

watching the meteor shower
amidst the falling stars
a UFO ascends

John J. Dunphy

John J. Dunphy is proud of the fact that he is one of scifaiku’s earliest poets. In other words, he’s both talented and old. Published collections of his scifaiku work include Stellar PossibilitiesDark Nebulae and pagan rites. He runs The Second Reading Book Shop in Alton, Illinois, USA.

Editor’s Note: Recently, John and the other twelve members of the Poets Thirteen were nominated for the Pushcart Prize by this publishing house for their renku, “Quantum Entanglement,” which appeared in the debut issue of The Lotus Tree Literary Review.
